Searching for a specialist Osteopath for Knee Pain?

Osteopathy is a practice that looks at how the body works as a whole, focusing on how the joints, muscles and ligaments function together to help realign your form and support physical wellbeing and joint health before any injuries arise.

At West 1 Health, our goal is not only to reduce any pain or discomfort you may be experiencing but also to help you understand the cause of the issue to reduce the likelihood of problems recurring. Based near Harley Street, our central London clinic is conveniently located so you can make appointments that fit into and around your schedule and get well on your way to recovery.

 Common Causes of Knee Pain

  • Sprains and strains - more often than not, these occur as a result of overstretching, overuse or twisting the knee during exercise.
  • Tendonitis - a pain between your kneecap and shin often caused by repetitive movements like running or jumping.
  • Torn Ligament - you’ll likely have heard of people tearing their ‘ACL’ (Anterior Cruciate Ligament), or having torn the meniscus. Both are quite common among active or elite sportspersons and can lead to severe pain or buckling when trying to stand and make it challenging to straighten the leg.
  • Dislocation - A sudden change in direction of the kneecap can cause it to discloate, causing great discomfort or pain.
  • Osgood-Schlatter's disease - Inflammation of the patella (the underside of the kneecap) that causes swelling below the kneecaps. This occurs most often in teenagers and young adults.
  • Anterior Knee Pain - often caused by the softening and breakdown of cartilage on the patella
  • Side effects during recovery from a knee replacement surgery
  • Arthritis

The advantages of osteopathy

  • You may not realise it but the whole body and its functions are connected, so something as simple as an imbalance elsewhere in the body could be putting strain or excess pressure through your knees. Osteopathy uses a unique philosophy that assesses the body as a whole rather than a sole injury so whatever the cause, our specialist osteopaths will help identify the issue and realign your form to help alleviate your knee pain.
  • Osteopathy is based on a hands-on approach, using soft tissue and joint mobilisation techniques without the need for invasive treatment or surgery to correct issues.

What To Expect

At West 1 Health, our specialised osteopaths have years of experience under their belts in treating knee pain and can create a tailored and effective treatment plan that addresses your individual condition and recovery needs.

During your first appointment with West 1 Health, your osteopath will examine your posture and range of motion, as well as get to know more about your medical history and your lifestyle to best understand the factors attributing to your knee pain symptoms.

Once the cause and pain-generating structures have been identified, your osteopath will walk you through their findings and discuss your options for treatment. Within this, they will outline the timelines, management options and any benefits or associated risks for transparency so you can make an informed decision. The session will then conclude with your initial treatment, which typically involves realigning the body by moving, stretching and massaging the muscles and joints.

Your osteopath will also provide you with exercises to integrate into your lifestyle to support treatment, help alleviate back pain in between sessions and get you on the road to recovery.

Our aim is for you to leave your first session with weight off your shoulders knowing that you’re in good hands, and a physical improvement to your knees as well.

FAQs

How long does an osteopathy session last?

Your first osteopath appointment will be 45mins and follow up sessions will be 30mins. We do also offer 60min sessions in our London clinic near Harley Street.

How much does treatment for knee pain cost?

For your first session with West 1 Health will last 45 minutes and cost £115. During this initial appointment, you will get a diagnosis of what’s causing your knee pain and a proposed treatment plan outlining recovery timelines and what each subsequent session will involve. Your first treatment will also be delivered within this session. Follow up sessions are £82 each but packages of 5 or 10 sessions can also be purchased at a reduced rate.

What’s the difference between an osteopath and a chiropractor?

Both Chiropractic and Osteopath are similar in the joint manipulation techniques they use, however they differ in their philosophies. Chiropractic works on the basis that your nervous system is at the centre of your health and focuses on the alignment of the spine within treatment. Osteopathy looks at the body as a whole and does not focus necessarily solely on the spine but how all the joints work together. Osteopathy traditionally incorporates more soft tissue release techniques to target inflamed muscles and treat other areas of the body to aid recovery. Additionally, an osteopath will likely prescribe at-home exercises and rehabilitation to improve your health and support treatment.

How quickly will an osteopath be able to treat my knee pain?

Treatment timelines are dependent on factors like the extent of your knee pain and severity of your symptoms. After your initial osteopath session, you will be given a prognosis which will include a time frame for recovery and any variables to be aware of that could impact this.
