Hello. Isn’t it time we met?

A patient visits a physiotherapy clinic with a view to making an appointment and the physiotherapist asks a few basic questions to get an idea of the extent of the problem. “How flexible are you?” he asks. The patient looks at him for a moment and replies: “I can only do Tuesdays and Thursdays.”

Okay, so the list of really good physiotherapy jokes isn’t exactly long. And the ones that do make the list aren’t the funniest gags you’ll ever hear.

But that one at least leads nicely into one of the things that really helps to define the service we provide at West 1 Physio – the fact that unlike the patient at the centre of the gag, we’re here for you when you need us.

So, let’s get the formalities out of the way and welcome you to this, our inaugural West 1 Physio blog, Over the coming weeks and months we’ll be offering regular articles containing hints, tips and advice to help you stay fit, healthy and able to enjoy life to the full along with what we hope will be an invaluable research resource to help you understand the work we do and how it can benefit you.

Like many people, you perhaps think physiotherapy is something that’s only available on referral from your GP or another healthcare professional; or maybe you’re someone who believes physio is a when-all-else-fails solution to a chronic problem.

The fact is, there are occasions when it can be both of those things, but what many people don’t always appreciate is that physiotherapy can be a regular and elective preventative treatment that can stop problems from occurring in the first place. In short, you don’t need to be told by your doctor to see a physio in order to get treatment that could help you live the life you’d choose for yourself.

At West 1 Physio, we’re no different. From back, neck and leg injury treatment to sports physio, pilates to gait analysis, workstation assessments to Shockwave therapy and rehabilitation programmes to advice on exercises and training regimes you can manage at home, we can get you fit and keep you fit so you can do the things you love the most.

So what is physiotherapy? Simplistically, it’s the management of the whole individual. You might have a pain in your foot, but that’s not necessarily where the problem is – so physiotherapy takes a holistic view of your body: the demands you make on it, how you use it, where the stresses are, how you manage it and how all of that relates to the symptoms you’ve got.

By doing that, we’ll cure the pain in your foot – but it’s possible we’ll do that by treating another part of your body that has either been damaged or used improperly. Not that our job is just about curing pain. We’re also big on helping you to understand how to use your body more effectively so the problem has less chance of recurring.

Our therapists are hugely experienced specialists with backgrounds in elite professional sport, spinal injury management, rehabilitative care, women’s health, pelvic, hip and groin treatment and acupuncture.

Alongside core physiotherapy treatment, our supplementary services like gait analysis, workstation assessment and pilates are all designed to help you use physiotherapy to stay healthy.
